Usually I say in conversation something along the lines of, <em>"Highschool is bad"</em>, and most people agree and we move on. In reality I don't just think highschool is bad… I think highschools are <strong>one of the worst social institutions to exist in the US</strong>. Most highschools are built in a way where they are <strong>perfected machines to <em>suck the soul out of learning</em></strong> for most if not all students.

I'll take this blog to both flesh out my point and express just how much I hate the structure of highschool.

First lets imagine a student interested a subject—lets say history. They love reading through history, finding historical trends, reading stories, and finding unique links between certain periods. Maybe they have a couple papers written out describing the unique parallels between the Roman empire & current day US—predicting failure modes in our current system. Altogether the students future seems extremely useful & promising.

Now lets design a system to completely break down this passion.

1. **Let's waste their time.** Let's literally take 8 hours out of their day, every single weekday. Which hours of the day? How about the morning ones, the ones where people commonly do their best work. What if they don't want to go? Let's make it government mandated!

   *What about their time at home?* Surely we can't stop them from working on history at home. **Lets give them "homework" (~3 hours of work a day).** But we can't let this homework be a creative outlet for them, that would be too much. Lets make them simple things, like problem sets, ten pages of notes, or even writing an essay in another language (which you have to take).

2. **Let's break their sense of community.** By telling them the only way they'll meet other people interested in history is in college. Of course the only way to get into college would be by checking the list—14 AP classes, 4.0 GPA, 1600 SAT, 36 ACT. If not someone else will check those boxes, someone else will get the community you want. Maybe you could lean into your passion—history?

3. **Lets break their passion.** *This is the most evil, most deplorable part of highschool in my opinion.* Lets make them hate history. How do we go about this? Its pretty complicated and well thought out, so hang with me here.

   **First we need to convince them history is actually just memorizing facts.** How could we get them to think this obvious lie? We'll repeat it to them. Every single day. For 181 days straight. We'll tell them their worth, how much they know "history", is by how many dates they can recite. How many people can they fill in the blank for, how many passages from the textbook can they memorize.

   **Second, we need to prove to them that they hate history.** How do we make them think such a thing? Give them homework. Take their passion that they once loved doing, and condense it down into a grotesque mind numbing activity. Every day have them memorize ten different dates, memorize a new chapter of history. Don't focus on the big ideas, make sure to have the homework focus on the "gotchas"—the exact spelling of the names, the specific type of product, June vs July.

   **Last we need to make it hard to escape.** The problem here is teachers. They might actually have a sense of passion for the subject, they might possibly show these students what real history looks like. How do we pull of the task? Rank teachers by how well their students do at memorizing dates. Perfect. That way teachers are obligated to throw out any passion they have for the subject, obligated to assign as much homework as possible, obligated to grade as harshly as possible—solely as long as more students get a 5 on an AP test.

Okay lets take a couple steps back. Do I regret my highschool experience? Surprisingly… I don't. **I managed to <a href="https://neelr.dev" style="color: #75a4c3;">do what I loved</a>, <a href="https://hackclub.com" style="color: #d47471;">meet communities outside of school</a>, and <a href="https://notebook.neelr.dev/stories/the-hacker-zephyr." style="color: #9065b0;">explore my passions</a>. In short, I was <span style="color: #cb932f;">lucky</span>.**

Though, if we invest so much time and effort into an educational system, ideally people who follow their passions and do what they love should be the norm—not an anomaly. How do we change such a system is an entirely different blog in and of itself (I have some outlines here <a href="https://notebook.neelr.dev/stories/education" style="color: #75a4c3;">on my blog about education</a>) but you can't deny the system is broken right now.

I'll keep my takes on the "what now" question pretty short for this (look above for more fleshed out takes):
- Charter/project focused schools are great but still fail in the way of mandatory classes + assigning students projects. Teachers are also still paid in metrics of how well their students do on standardized tests => leads to systemic issues.

- "Some highschools aren't as competitive => aren't that bad." My response here is mainly that the competitive highschools are at the current equilibrium given a majority of students want to go to college (limited seats mean inherent competition). Noncompetitive highschools will probably attract people who want to stand out => cause other students to start the rat race. We probably shouldn't be designing systems that work worse when there are more passionate people. 

- IMO College admission rates aren't the whole problem. We probably need a structure that 1) gets people to their passions quicker and 2) allows them to up-skill fast. If this happens then ideally colleges would of course want better people and the system would adapt pretty fast.

- Private schools seem to work better because they have the resources to tailor an education to every single student—think having college professors teaching for highschoolers. This just isn't scalable with almost 50k-70k per year per student. I also don't know how they work for students who already want to specialize (ie. why waste a students time teaching the Bohr model of an atom when they're interested in Roman history—it's extremely hard to align student current interests with what you "want to teach them")

- I'm bearish on the classroom + curriculum method of education. It seems fundamentally problematic to distill peoples interests into curriculum that they must follow (contrary to interests at times), as well as trying to align to 30+ student interests.

- Colleges seem better initially because you get much more freedom with classes (checking for the classroom problem), but I think this mindset still plagues mandatory "intro series" classes.

This blog post is more of a rant/expressing just how much I hate the system as it is right now and I definitely think there should be more discussion into how to reform it! This takes a ton of inspiration from <a href="https://worrydream.com/refs/Lockhart_2002_-_A_Mathematician's_Lament.pdf">"A Mathematicians Lament"</a>—I genuinely love this paper and think that it highlights a lot of the problems I find are crazy with todays educational system.

a quick rant + explanation of why I have this take

For context, I competed in circuit policy debate in highschool at the national/state level. If you’re unfamiliar, its a competitive debate format with talking speeds around… 350wpm. This is crazy fast and trains people to think extremely fast.

Because of policy, I can oftentimes think of arguments extremely fast & easily. This usually can be expanded to areas outside of debate, letting me think of pro/cons to frameworks pretty easily, how to create different projects, and thinking about general ideas. In the past I haven’t explored how my thoughts work, and this will (try?) to be my first formalization of how my brain thinks during debate + creating new concepts. This has worked for me, and might not work for you (here be dragons).

In the next couple section’s I’ll describe a mental model I use to think faster—it’s pretty simple but has been extremely useful to me! No matter how simple the model your brain uses, uncovering exactly how it works + working to make it function better is important to make the model better.

There are different systems that optimize recall/memory, but I would say that the modular system I’ll try to outline is good in a variety of scenarios that require coming up with new ideas on the fly. For example a memory palace, which is extremely good for recall, might not actually be as fast if you need to manipulate the data (think the difference between a fast encryption algorithm vs homomorphic encryption, for one you can manipulate the indexes themselves meaningfully).

The first step is to consume tons of new arguments. Whether its literally consuming by reading or maybe its thinking deeply about a topic, you come across new ideas. My main approach here is to break the argument down into its constituent subparts. For example, take Universal Basic Income (UBI). It has aspects of socialism, government involvement, post-industrialization, and more. Now when you read arguments for/against UBI, you can sort them into these specific building block/general classes.

As you consume more information, your tree of building blocks should increase—along with the actual arguments that these building blocks relate to. For example, capitalism might be associated with overgrowth and competition problems. These building blocks often come with problems that show up extremely often.

To do this in real-time, you need to practice breaking down arguments. Now say you’re approached with a topic out of complete left field—”Monkeys in Narnia are instituting mandatory curfews”. Here the argument might seem absurd and pretty different at first glance from consuming data, but it can be broken down into smaller building blocks! Mandatory curfews sound a lot like government intervention, curfews might relate to the literal concept of curfews in highschool/parent psychology, etc. Then we can cross apply the pro/con arguments relating to these building blocks to the monkey situation.

A good tip here is to iteratively expanding the topic until you get to areas that you're familiar with—finding a connection to your tree of ideas.

NOTICE: Here the majority of thinking was not actually finding pro/con arguments to the topic. The actual time we took thinking was focused on deconstructing our new concept into small familiar blocks—each which we have answers for and against already prepped for us in our mental tree.

Some ways I think getting good at deconstructing data is helpful:

In meetings/interviews where you need to answer questions fast but in an in depth fashion. If you just have a really good modular understanding of yourself, you don’t need to think hard during an interview.


During conversation! Being a good conversationalist is hard and requires understanding concepts extremely fast… but what if you could fake it? By actually just focusing on listening to exactly what the person is saying + doing a retrieval based on those modular blocks, you’re left with a ton of interesting things to say (while being a better listener)!


Solving problems on the fly! When people talk about different problems they’re tackling, having an expressive modular prior can help you find new paths. This is a large reason why interdisciplinary research has gained so much hype in the past decades.

I commonly compartmentalize my tree or basically get rid of seemingly large unwieldily ideas. By modularizing your tree in your free time, this actually does a lot of precomputing for handling a new argument. By having more granular (again, not necessarily more data) building blocks, you can get a better hang of new concepts that are deep out of your comfort zone.

create an (impact) masterfile: I highly recommend actually consolidating impacts that you care about—climate change, chemical war, ai safety—and finding pro/cons to each of them. Since any argument usually has an impact, this can help you a lot. In a broader sense, outside of argumentation, this would probably look like drawing out a literal google document of things you care about and ideas associated with them—physically building out these building blocks.

In non-debate areas this could look like specifically writing down topics you're interested in, creating write-ups of all your different projects, or even making a blog ;) !


create new arguments: A fun activity would be to look at your building blocks and… create! For example what do you get when you put together famine, economic crisis, and monkey wellfare—maybe an argument saying that monkeys should eat all the food to prevent the economy from falling. Even these small terrible arguments help you get familiar with your building blocks. By getting a deep understanding of how these pieces interact, it helps you decompose them later.

I love to do this with people in any topic area. A majority of my conversations actually tends to revolve around interesting new ideas & finding weird implications. If you use this method to introspect, this could even look like imagining conterfactual versions of yourself given different experiences.


read & analyze: The easiest way to get better at deconstructing arguments is basic practice. Reading books with a critical lens, finding the constituent building blocks in your tree, and finding problems is a good practice that can both 1) help you get better at thinking and 2) increase the amount of data in your tree!

Hopefully this was helpful! I think in my life this skill has been super helpful, and I enjoy thinking about thinking!

P.S. This is only as useful as your background knowledge in general is! Rapidly consuming content or thinking in isolation are my two favorite ways to just "grow" my tree.

an internal model of how I process information—along with practices I do in my free time!

So... the education system. Its a given fact that almost every person has some qualm with it, from the capitalistic colleges, to the uninspired highschool system. This has been a huge qualm that almost every student has gone through, so why hasn't it been solved already? You would think that if every single person in the US was forced to go through a system, it would be polished to perfection from the sheer magnitude of people that go through it. Today I'll try and explore how, and why its remained unchanged for so long, and give my 2 cents on how to fix it.  

Starting with the first reason, is the way education is taught. The fact of the matter is that it's always going to be easier to make people memorize, than learn. Since every kid learns a different way, if you just make them memorize and test, they won't learn, but you may see some short term results. Students never really learn anything that way.  

The way people learn, is by personal teaching, and idea based learning, which is intrinsically going to be very hard if you just try to stick by a "curriculum". Some teachers do manage to do this, but its multitudes harder than just sitting in the back and putting on a slide show. There is no incentive for teachers to be "good teachers", because as long as students pass, they get paid.  

Secondly, for colleges and schools, there is no competition. Colleges know they can milk money from you for reputation, even if the actual learning experience is the same. If you ask a regular high schooler if they would go to MIT without learning, or community college with MIT courses, the obvious choice should be the community college. But at the end of the day, in our twisted world, people choose MIT, just for the prestige. Since people talented flock to colleges for the name, you can't really have any other competition, which makes the cost skyrocket. The fact of the matter is that almost any college could use endowments for tuition, or more, but they don't and they won't because they can make money off of you.  

The final reason for all of this, is the risk for students. Sure, I could try and drop out of high school, or I could take 0 AP classes and self study as much as possible outside of school, but that doesn't guarantee anything. I could take useless classes, pay thousands for college, and do good in life, or take the risky way and rely on myself. In an ideal world with more than one life, I might try and take the risky way, but since I'm good at academics, and seem to benefit from the system, I probably won't do anything.  

This type of system feeds into itself, because it's all built out, and trying to change it from the inside out is risky, and taking any other path is risky. When people leave the system, they see their success, and just take it as a "quirk of life". So my hope is sometime, someday, once I do make it out, I can change it from the outside in, and make sure no-one else has to choose between risk, and real education.  

So, the system is broken, and it's terribly hard to change. What do we do? First of all, I think we should invest way more into school, and specifically teachers. When you pay them too little, you end up getting unmotivated workers, and lose all the ones that love to teach, but can't live with the wage. Currently, if someone is a good teacher, they can most likely be paid better in another job outside of school. You can't get motivated, good teachers, that will deviate from curriculum and teach well, if you don't hire good teachers. And the only way to hire good teachers is with good pay. There is no real way around it, and people shouldn't have to choose between their passion and money.  

Another solution would be a decentralized way to rank colleges. This way, you can have something like critics for colleges, who are able to rank teachers and more. This means that if you can prove that a place like community college has a class on par with unmotivated teachers from a university, you're able to choose the community college. This would force colleges to lower tuition fees to attract students, as they know which places have good teachers. This could even be paired with a "standardized test" (not written, probably a test of real world skills), to judge someones skills without their degree. This would also make colleges provide quality education to stay on top.  

Thats basically my 2 cents and rant on education, and I hope you were able to take something away from it! I believe that the tech industry can (hopefully) save education in some way or form.

Here I take a look at why the education system as a whole is doomed to repeat its cycle, and how we need a strong force of change.

Over the past few months the TeachAids team and I been developing a way for children to learn about covid19 easily and have a lot of fun while doing it! The end result was CoviDB 4 Kids. While interning at TeachAids, a team was put together to develop a way to solve the problem that new information was mainly being targeted towards adults, while children were kept in the dark. After brainstorming a few ways to go about it, we settled on a website where kids of all ages could easily watch curated videos on the topic.

After months of development and input from our fabulous designer, the end product was done! Built with Next.js, Theme UI, and Rebass, CoviDB 4 Kids uses a kid friendly UI to teach kids from 3-12 about covid19! It was really fun, and an amazing project to work on, and I got to learn so much about how to think about user experience, as well as developing a website professionally. 

I just wanted to take a second to say a big thank you to everyone I worked with there, as its always been fun to work with them and talk with them on our calls!

My story on how I helped TeachAids in developing CoviDB 4 Kids,  a COVID-19 (a new coronavirus) educational resource database for kids!

**TLDR;** The education system is broken and doesn't achieve what its supposed to. My proposed way to fix it is to run simulations of the real world to prepare students, as well as teach game theory and philosophy to enrich our understanding of how society works.  




In [Indiana University's survey](https://www.nais.org/Articles/Documents/NCGS%2520Presentation-Jun2013.pdf) of 81,000 students, 73 percent said they didn't like the school, and 60 percent said they didn't see the value in what they were learning. In an education system, perfected since 1635, almost 385 years, how can so many students hate it, and not even know why they learn what they learn? Before engaging on my opinions on how these came to be, and possible solutions, let us start by defining the education system. Currently, almost every single person has differing views, but I'll settle on the one defined in Harvard Law Reviews, "Social, Emotional, Ethical, and Academic Education" by Jonathan Cohen. He describes an education system's goal to prepare people socially, mentally, ethically, and academically. These all combine for the one goal, to help the economy, and to become a good member of society. I would argue that our current education system only delivers academics and a half-assed version of even that. I'll try to articulate where and why our current education system fails, and propose some possible ways to fix it.
### Definition of the Problem
First off our current education system. First, let us take the basis of our education system. It relies on the fact that students can learn when given material to learn, and later being asked to repeat what they learned 1-2 weeks later. I would argue, that an efficient student, can learn to succeed in school by short term memorization, and never really learn. The reason this works is since mostly everything is based on how well you can remember concepts and regurgitate them, there is no incentive to learn. Without an incentive to learn, students repeat this cycle, managing to get rewards (good grades), seemingly to forget about it the next year.  

This system doesn't help education as defined in any of our goals. It affects students socially, by pushing friends and family away with heavy courseloads (which students are incentivized to do with grades and GPAs), and also negatively affects them emotionally with the constant stress and numerical grades. We can actively see some of the side effects of these negative emotions with suicide and depression rates of teens at an all-time high. Ethically, our system does not promote cooperation or foster a sense of community or cooperation.  

I would actively argue that with competition at its highest, people are forced to compete against each other, discourage kindness, and helpfulness. Academically, our students are learning, but actively seem to forget the information taught, swapping it out each year with a new set of things to memorize. Without active retention, most people forget the material, but it does teach us good study habits, and how to learn on our own.  
### Possible Solutions
After thinking for a bit about possible solutions to education, I thought of one that might do the job. After doing work with AI using reinforcement learning, I was thinking about how it could be used in real life. What if we taught the basics up to first or second grade, and made them simulate economies, and judge people based on their success. Not only this, but also teach them about game theory, philosophy, and how to act like a rational actor.  

These would truly prepare them for real life and teach them social skills from game theory. Socially, it achieves its goal by teaching them how to act in real life, and the best way to learn how to act in real life is to simulate it with lesser impacts. They would be able to work with others, and also gain valuable knowledge from game theory about why honesty and trustworthiness matter, and when to be honest. They would gain good mental health through economic simulations because it would be fun and provide rewards. With no real impacts, students wouldn't have to study, but work on things that they enjoy, and love.  

This is great ethically because currently, our school system enforces ideals without any logic to support it. Through learning game theory and philosophy, they can come to understand how we came to uphold freedom, why academic dishonesty is bad, and why bullying would be bad. Academically, would be where this would differ the most from our current school system.  

Overall, I feel that most of what we learn in school is never put into use, but the parts that we do need to know would be learned through the simulation. Students can now self learn through the internet, and would be able to pick up new subjects as they go. For example, I was able to do this with programming, which then became something that I excel in, where I learned almost everything from YouTube videos. This way, students would be prepared to self learn, and gain knowledge useful in the real world, with real tasks.
### Conclusion
Overall, I feel like our current education system is outdated, and not built to accomplish goals, but no one says anything about it because it is so normalized. A good way to test this would be to try this in a small sample population of high-schoolers and look at the outcomes. One place it might fail would be to give colleges a good metric of how a student does. The reason I didn't elaborate on this, is because I feel colleges already are starting to lean more on essays rather than numbers, and I feel like a simulation would give a more holistic view of a student, not including their economic background. I'm excited about this, and would love to look more into testing a solution like this in the future!


The state of our current education system, and reforms that might work

Once I got off the AMA with Elon, I started to think about the biggest and most interesting points that I heard, and compiled a few different points

The maker movement is a movement where people realize that they can actually make and create the things that they use. With all the amazing technologies we have from 3d printers, to computers, we can build and prototype anything that we see. When asked about the maker movement, Elon responded by saying that people don't realize that they can create things, and talked that people should not only focus digitally, but actually take a look at optimizing and innovation. This is because people focus a lot of effort on cranking out products with more resources etc, when you solve the base problems of production, then you can increase the output without needing more resources. The main gist of everything he said is that people shouldn't be disconnected from everyday products, but be interested in the supply chain etc, because that's where innovation is needed.

TLDR; People need to think about where products come from and look into optimizing supply chains and production.

As a debater, I've seen people debate that capitalism is inherently flawed etc, but what Elon said really strikes home. Basically what he said was that capitalism in a sense, is not flawed, because it completely depends on the rules governing it. For example, to solve climate change we would need to stop consuming plastics, but currently plastic and oil are profitable, and therefore will not be fixed. Also gas cars are cheaper and easier to ride, so people choose them. For capitalism to work, you need to set the rules right, which is why he supports a carbon tax. This way, you can set the system to favor people who actually care about the environment, and penalize those who don't. This will slowly but surely shift the tide, because in capitalism, people have an aversion to loss and hurting the environment will no longer be the easier way.

Another interesting point that he made about the government is that the government is nothing other than a large monopoly. What this basically means, is that it has a monopoly over all the money and people. The reasons for the comparison is that a company isn't a monopoly and is small (Confederate US), the feedback loop that companies have (demand of customers => what the company does), was strong, in that if the people didn't want taxes, wanted the right to form a militia, etc. the government conformed. But now that the US is large and is basically a monopoly of power and hegemony (I semi-believe this, because China, Russia, and other superpowers are there), the country doesn't have to conform to the wills of the people. This is why he said it's especially important that people work for change in the country, and to fully not reply on the goverment. Extending in this from my point of view, I think that Locke's Social Contract can be seen here, where in simplest terms, it has 2 parts. First, people give up rights and freedoms (like how people need to follow laws), to a government to maintain safe and protect our other rights. The second part, is that if people at any point become dissatisfied by the government, they have the right to overthrow and re-establish a new government. Here, we can see that if at any point, there becomes a true monopoly of a government, people need to take it upon themselves to overthrow the monopoly and establish a new government that truly serves the rights of the people.

TLDR; Capitalism depends on the rules of money flow, and the government can be considered a monopoly, which decreases its responsiveness to people. This should be solved by people taking things into their own hands, and to not rely on the government.

Another question that he received, was how to convince people of your ideas. The response he gave was amazing, which was that you shouldn't base any thoughts or judge ideas from the person it comes from. Whether or not someone is a Nobel Prize Winner, or just another student, you should evaluate ideas from the basis of knowledge. The best way to convince someone, is to rely on physics, and explain that it would truly work and is possible. During his response, he also talked about how when you start thinking of an idea, you need to strip it down to its bones. This is so that there are no wrong preconceived notions, and then you build up from there. That way you can truly figure out a solution to an idea, when you think of it from the basics or science, and then can you only find solutions to those problems.

TLDR; Ideas should be based on the feasibility from the laws of physics, and to find solutions to problems, you need to strip it down to its basics then build up.

Though I won't spend too much time on it, I love the way Elon put this. The fact that brain's themselves can be thought as extremely complex AI, and that they are simply very complicated circuits. From that viewpoint, he talked about inputs, and how technology and the internet are a large amount of input, and getting it from your eyes, and interacting with your muscles, is like trying to access an ocean from a straw. The idea is that, like an AI that can accept many inputs and can be trained, if a human received an input like the internet from the brain in a electrical signal, once our brains figure out how to decode it, we would be able to access information at unimaginable rates that couldn't be thought before. With this mindset, it wouldn't be impossible to integrate with AI, or other inputs.

TLDR; The mindset that your mind is a complex AI, and can interpret any number of inputs that it receives, means we can wire inputs directly into our brain.

My highlights from being on an AMA with Elon musk, and some amazing points that I took from it!

> "My [child] recently enrolled in your HTML / CSS class and had a blast. In his words, he learned more in 2 weeks than what he did from a coding academy he used to go to in 3 months." 
\- **A Happy Parent**

For the past few weeks, I've been teaching a modest class of about 28 students, going through the basics of HTML, CSS, and JS on [Hack University](https://university.hackclub.com). During those days of teaching, there was one main thing I went over on the first day. **The reason you learn, is to make and create.** 

This has been one of my core principles ever since I started to
program, and do much of anything in my life. From day 1 in 4th grade, I decided I learned Python, a language where I learned the basics of programming, and the logic of it all. I got bored of programming and gave up after I learned the basics. This is what happens to almost every budding programmer, be it from 4th grade to college. 

This all changed once I realized that I wanted to make something cool. I set my mind on building a testing application, to record people's reaction times. From then, I researched about [the Stroop Effect](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stroop_effect) and other ways I could record reactions. Then I realized, that I needed to run python on my Chromebook (before I knew of repl.it), and proceeded to learn to chroot my Chromebook to allow me to run Linux and then eventually run a Stroop Effect reaction test in Python. Through the entire experience, I think I learned more than I ever could from reading books, and memorizing functions, and learned to apply my brain to try to find resources to learn based on a goal.

What I stated above is something I call **goals based learning** where you learn a new subject, be it a new language like Go, or parametric equations, by working towards an end goal. This is because, if you start to learn something, without actually making something on the way, you end up becoming disinterested, or just plain give up. Also what this technique shows you is the real meaning of learning, is to do. What that means is that the reason you learn anything in life, in essence, is to do something, either by furthering that discovery or by applying it elsewhere. There is nothing gained by someone who just learns and forgets.

Back to the first quote, the reason I've received multiple 
emails saying that their children liked the class and learned, is because I gave them space and a goal. The goal was to create a website, about anything cool that you liked, and then I shoved a boatload of information into their face and taught them how to google. This way, when facing an obstacle that they haven't faced before when creating, they can easily research and learn ways to fix the problem, and eventually complete their projects independently.

The best and foremost positive about this mindset and learning process is that it doesn't emphasize the idea you can learn anything, but you can make anything. Once people can look at a project, split it up into chunks of what to learn and do, and finish the project, they can manage to create anything in the world, where nothing is unattainable.

My take on how to teach people in general

<p class="para">What is open source? <a href="https://opensource.org/osd-annotated">Defined by opensource.org</a>, it's a variety of things, including the ability to access the entirety of it. So far, we have made many movements to make software, and other materials open source, but imagine if we could make education open source. A place where subjects can be taught to students regardless of classes, school, and age. Where teachers can teach excited students from all over the world, each one specially learning a specific area that they love.</p>

<p class="para">Today, I deployed something I've wanted for a long time. Ever since I was young, I wanted to learn. Whether it being quantum mechanics, or programming. There is always a point at which, it would be amazing to have a real teacher to help and guide you with the abundant online material.</p>
<p class="para">This is the main reason I created <a href="https://university.hackclub.com">Hack University</a>, a way for teachers to open source their syllabus and classes during COVID19! Along with that, the idea that <a href="https://hackclub" class="redlink">Hack Club</a>, had, which was a way in which students can teach each other amazing things during the COVID19 quarantine! I really hope this utility will be used by people, because its truly the exact tool I've been looking for, and I hope I can build the community I've always wanted with it, a group of avid learners, with classes to match.</p>

Flashship Summit was an amazing experience! It was a gathering of people from all around the US, to learn how to start/make/create a [Hack Club](https://hackclub.com)! So what is a Hack Club? It basically is a club, in school or out of school, of people who want to learn to program, teach programming, or collaborate with other people on cool projects. The second thing you might be thinking is _"HACK"_ aghhh thats something scary! What we are trying to do is take away that stigma, and change it into something to create and learn! Overall, the main takeaways were:  
- How to create a hackathon
- How to teach people, and make them engaged and interested
- That there are so many resources and people to help you on the way to helping your community!
